mac system preferences not saving

When I change the scroll direction of my mouse and trackpad in system preferences, it only saves until I sleep or log out of my account. When I reopen my account on my Mac, the scroll directions reset back to what they were before.

MacBook Air, macOS 12.6

That is unexpected behavior, and we'd like to help rule out some possible causes by confirming the following:

We see you have the latest macOS 12.6 installed, so we can rule out being outdated. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
Is this occurring with the built-in trackpad, or an external mouse?
Has this been the behavior ever since you first used your Mac, and if not, when did this start?
