Problem connecting monitor to Mac Mini

I connected the computer and monitor with an HDMI canble, but only get a screen with alternating computer and mouse images. Some actual instructions would have been nice.

The Mac mini is looking for a keyboard and mouse which is a normal part of the initial setup.

If you have a new Magic keyboard and mouse or track pad, plug them into the Mac mini using their supplied ‘charging cables.

If you have the older wireless keyboard and mouse, then you need to use a wired USB keyboard and mouse to get thru the initial setup, then connect your wireless keyboard and mouse.
