inconsistent text notifications

My iphone 8 was not consistently notifying me with sound when I received new texts. I tried everything to resolve and when I upgraded to a 12, I was so excited to leave that issue behind. It followed me. I have tried everything, but I will try everything again if it might resolve this issue. It is inconsistent with no discernable pattern. I can be sitting waiting for a text with the screen locked and it won't play a sound. Or it will. With the screen unlocked and it won't play a sound. Or it will. It is so frustrating! It is not on silent mode. I used the default text tone for all contacts. Any ideas?

Hello lorbrett,

It seems like you are not getting all notifications, specifically with text/messages, right? Does this happen with any other apps or it's only with the Messages app?

You've done some great steps already. Take a look at the steps listed below to endure that notifications are set up correctly and to help with receiving notifications on your iPhone:

1. Go to Settings  > Notifications > Messages.
2. Choose options, including the following:
- Turn Allow Notifications and immediate delivery for Time Sensitive Notifications on or off.
- Set the position, locations, style, and sounds for alerts.
- Choose when message previews should appear on the Lock Screen, and how they should be grouped.
- Set how many times to repeat an alert (from Never to 10 Times) below Customize Notifications.

You also mentioned that you upgraded your iPhone. Did you restore the new iPhone from a backup from your old iPhone?

Regards.

Hey lorbrett,

Thanks for the details. If the issue occurred on the old phone and restored a backup of that device onto the new phone, then it is possible that the issue transferred to the new phone from the backup. The only way to isolate the issue and know for sure is by restoring to factory settings and setting up as a new device to test for the issue before restoring from the backup again. The details on getting it done can be found here: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings and below.

Get your device ready
1. Make sure that your Mac or PC is updated. If you're using iTunes, make sure that you have the latest version.
2. If you want to save the information on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, make a backup.
3. Go to Settings > [your name] > Find My, tap Find My iPhone, then turn it off. Learn what to do for an unresponsive device or one that won't turn on. Get help if you forgot your passcode.

Restore your device to factory settings
1. On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open the Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes. Find out which macOS your Mac is using.
2. Connect your device to your computer.
3. If a message asks for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the onscreen steps. Get help if you forgot your passcode
4. Select your device when it appears on your computer. Learn what to do if your iPhoneiPad, or iPod touch is unresponsive or won't turn on. Or get help if your device doesn't appear on your computer.
5. Click Restore [device]. If you're signed into Find My, you need to sign out before you can click Restore.
6. Click Restore again to confirm. Your computer erases your device and installs the latest iOS, iPadOS, or iPod software.
7. After your device restores to factory settings, it restarts. Now you can set it up as new.

Best regards
