i just purchased an iphone 14 pro max from apple.com. but in order to qualify for trade in value of my old iphone, i am directed to turn in my current iphone within 14 days of purchase. but my new iphone is not available for delivery until oct 26-nov 2 or later. why can't i turn in my current iphone AFTER the delivery of the new one?

You can, the trade in partner won't send you the box to send it back to them until a few days around the receipt of your new iPhone. They want you to still have your old phone so you can do a Quick Setup.

And before you use the return box take many detailed pictures of your trade-in phone and a video of your phone/screen working (it should be displaying "hello" in many languages) and save those.

You most likely can. Contact apple themselves (do you have any contact info on your order form?) and find out what they say.

It is 14 days after you receive the trade in kit…which you will either receive with your new iPhone or afterwards (mine arrives tomorrow but received my 14 pro max on the 16th).
