Apple Watch 6 gets error updating to watch OS9

Apple watch 6 gets error when updating to watch OS9 after iphone13 was succesfully updated to IOS16.0. Tried recycling power on both to no avail. I cannot unpair the two because iPhone watch app prompts to update the watch before anything else.
