Apple Mail rules disappearing/unchecked/old ones reappearing after closing Apple Mail

I have an M1 MacMini, Monterey 12.6, and have my iCloud account/email synced across my MacMini, iPhone, and iPad, and all devices have current OS updates.

I'll create some rules, close Apple Mail/shut down Mac, open Apple Mail/turn on Mac, my rules are gone/unchecks/old ones

Now when I first got my MacMini this wasn't a problem, April of 2021. I had tons of rules and everything worked like a charm. But a few months back this issue with rules started to happen. The only thing I can think of that might have caused this is I was trying to figure out where Apple Books stores the books on my Mac and I was trying to delete them. And maybe I moved/deleted something that was important to Apple Mail rules?

Some rules I created for this post.

This is what shows after I closed Apple Mail and then opened it back up.

I've read some posts here about similar rule behavior but they were very complex. I'm at the point where I'm thinking about going to the Apple Store for help. But I'd rather try and fix it myself. Any help I can get with this would be appreciated 🙏🏽👍🏽!!!

Thanks for reaching out, LoboVerde.

It sounds like you're having some trouble with your Mail rules disappearing. We can help.

You mentioned that you thought there was a possibility that you might have removed something important related to your Mail rules. If you did delete or move system files, it can certainly have unexpected results. Let's go ahead and see if there are any updates for your Mac mini and make sure that you're on the latest software, but also that the software is complete: Update macOS on Mac.

Once updated, go ahead and see if the behavior continues.

Take care.

LoboVerde,

Got it. Thanks for checking to see if that helped.

Since you're still experiencing the same issue, we'd like to continue isolating this issue. Testing this behavior in safe mode is the first step. This will scan you startup disc and do a basic check. It will also delete some caches, and stop certain software from running as it starts up. We'd be interested to see if the Mail rules behave as expected at that point.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Let us know how that goes.

Cheers!

Hi LoboVerde,

A great way to isolate the behavior is to create another Administrator account and test it out. If needed, here are the steps: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

This will tell you if the issue is specific to one account or possibly a system-wide issue.

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .
2. If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
3. Click the Add button below the list of users.
4. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose Administrator.
5. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
6. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
7. Click Create User.

Best regards.
