I just bought an extra 50GB worth of storage to upgrade to MacOS 10.15 on my MacBook Air. I try to update the available update in system preferences and it says I do not have enough storage space on my disk. Please help.

If you bought additional iCloud storage space, it's separate from that inside the computer.

If you bought a physical drive, you need to move content to it.
