Three basic steps:
1) Setup your AppleCash card. (a virtual pre-paid spending card which only “exists” in your Wallet app.)
2) Initially fund (pre-charge) your AppleCash card using a debit card.
3) Send/receive money to/from other AppleCash participants with iMessage.
