I have the same problem. Many artist pictures are missing. See screenshot below.

Every CD in my library has album art. It is all custom. That is, I got the album art, added it to the music files and then imported the music files to the Music app.

However, despite having album art for every album still many artist images are missing. I cannot see a pattern that would allow me to determine why there is an artist picture for one and not for another artist. I have many albums that were matched. However, even among them there are artists with no artist picture.

Currenently I have "Automatic update artwork" disabled because I am afraid that the Music app will mess up my custom album art. I am afraid the Music app will replace existing album art. Having this option unselected may block adding artist picture for a new album that I add to the Music library. However, I just very recently unselected that option. And the missing artist picture problem I have since a long time.

What would really be helpful is some information about what "Automatic update artwork" does and does not do. Information beyond the one sentence that is given in the Music app Preferences. And how artist pictures are placed. What is the process the Music app goes through to select and place an artist's picture? What could go wrong in this process? What can one do to maximize the chance that an artist's picture is found and placed.

Bummer. But thanks for your reply.

I would really appreciate it if Apple would be more forthcoming with how they match album art and artist pictures. And would give some guidance about how to maximize the chances that matching album art and artist pictures are found.

I fully agree with you. "Apple works in mysterious ways." Overly secretive, leaving one at the mercy of guessing.

I have a follow-up question. Maybe you can help.

I turned "Automatically update artwork" back on in the Music app preferences.

Then I monitored changes to the artist's pictures in the sidebar in artist view.

In particular, I monitored whether an artist's picture would be added to the artist "Westernhagen".

Previously I had "Westernhagen" in my library listed as "Marius Müller Westernhagen".

Then I noticed that the name listed in the iTunes library is "Westernhagen".

So, my hypothesis then was that an artist's picture was not added because the artist's name did not match.

I then adjusted the name in my library and watched whether an artist's picture would be added during the

next album art check during the Music app startup.

An artist's picture was not added to my library despite an artist's picture being prominently shown in the iTunes library

and I am having several matched Westernhagen albums in my library including the first one listed also being matched.

Question: Why does iTunes not recognize "Westernhagen" in my library? Why is the artist's picture not added to my library even though obviously the artist provided a picture to be shared?

I assume that the picture shown at the top of the Westernhagen site in the iTunes library is the artist's picture to be shared. See the screenshot below.

If I recall correctly at one time iTunes would generate artist images automatically from available art, and had a method to let you set custom artwork for an artist. That is no longer the case and artist images are now supplied via the iTunes store for selected artists only. Presumably they have to submit they images they want used. If they don't engage, no image.

Thanks for the suggestion and the link. I sent a feedback.

I sent the following text:

I have albums of several hundred artists in the Music app. Only about half of the artists have an artists image despite "Automatically update artwork" in the preferences being checkmarked. And despite having only matched albums for many artists without artists image.

I made sure that the artists names in my library are as they appear in iTunes. In addition, I checked whether iTunes seems to have an artist image of many artists in my library. In many cases, it is obvious that iTunes has an artists image. Still, the Music app does not import the artists image.

It is a mystery to me what guides the import of artists images. And what may lead to the failure of the import of such image.

Making user-based assignment of artists images possible will solve the issue.
