Apple Watch won't update until I update iPhone

I updated my iPhone to 15.7 today. But when I tried to update my Apple Watch, it tells me "To update the software on your Apple Watch, you first need to update the software on my iPhone.". I click on that link and go to settings where it tells me my iPhone is up to date.

Anybody else have this problem?

Interesting. Your question got me to Google how to update WatchOS without an iPhone:

If your Apple Watch has watchOS 6 or later, you can install subsequent updates without your iPhone:

  1. Make sure that your watch is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. On your watch, open the Settings app.
  3. Tap General > Software Update.
  4. Tap Install if a software update is available, then follow the onscreen instructions.

I've tried that. It tells me "Unable to check for update. An error occurred while checking for a software update." It then gives a choice of canceling or trying again. Trying again gives the same result (multiple times). I've verified that I am connected to Wi-Fi. The watch is currently on Version 8.7 (19U66). It's a Series 5 by the way. My iPhone is a 7.
