Unknown Airtag Tracking

My daughter is away at college and her iPhone alerted her that "AirTag Detected near You". When looking at the airtag in Find My it can't be found, nor is she able to see any information on it or play a sound. She cannot locate the physical airtag either.

However there are the red dashed lines showing her location and where she has gone to class etc. These red lines were over a course of 2 days. If these red lines weren't there I would think it would be someone in a neighboring dorm room that has an airtag.

Any recommendations? I have no experience with AirTags to know what to do next. Is there any reports of incorrect iPhone alerts for airtags? She tried on 3 different devices to locate the tag but was unable to do so. Also her roommates phone doesn't see it as well.

Hello mdkeller,

Being able to locate an AirTag that is detected near you (your daughter) is extremely important From the description, it sounds as though she's following those steps without success in locating the AirTag.

  1. "Tap the alert.
  2. Tap Continue and then tap Play Sound.
  3. Listen for the sound. You can play it again if you need more time to find the item."

While your daughter is walking through the right steps, she may find the following details helpful in addressing this prompt further and not being able to locate the AirTag.

If the option to play a sound isn't available, the item might not be with you anymore. Or if it was with you overnight, its identifier might have changed. Find My uses the identifier to determine that it's the same item moving with you. If the item is within range of its owner, you also won't be able to play a sound.

If the option to play a sound isn't available, or if you're unable to hear the sound and you believe the item is still with you, look through your belongings to try to find it. Check on your person, or in anything in your possession that could contain this device. It could be in an item that you don’t check often, like a jacket pocket, the outer compartment of a bag, or your vehicle. If you can't find the device and if you feel your safety is at risk, go to a safe public location and contact law enforcement.

If you need additional support regarding this message, take a look at the following article. It provides great information on what to do if you can't locate the AirTag, how to disable it, etc.

Take care!
