I have several group chats that have disappeared recently. The chats were not deleted and other members still see me in the chat.
the phone has plenty of storage, messages are set to keep forever.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

If you restart your iPhone, do the chats reappear?
Also, do you use Messages in iCloud? You can confirm if this feature is enabled under Settings > [your name] > iCloud and check if Messages is toggled on.
