It seems that Target Display mode only works on old iMacs, and the Airplay to Mac function is too laggy to use the iMac as a reliable monitor. What's the best workaround? I've considered Luna Display, but that is a little pricey. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

full motion video? or slow-to-change stuff like stock quotes, spread sheets, and program listings?

Yes you can. Go into the settings and into screen you should be able to to connect it
