Looking for an affordable external display to connect to my 24" iMac.

I need some help looking for a very affordable external display for my 24" iMac (2021). I picked one up today after someone had mentioned it would be compatible but it's actually hurting my eyes. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or they're not compatible (sorry, I'm not tech savvy)? I'm also thinking of going bigger and getting a 27" monitor instead. Here are the specs for the one I have now:

HP M24f

Optimum resolution: 1920 x 1080 @ 60hz

Maximum resolution: 1920 x 1080 @75hz

1080p

AMD FreeSync

When I upgraded from my 10 year old Mac Pro Desktop I had a couple of HD monitors spare. They each work on M1 iMac using a USB to DVI/VGA adapter. These older displays are probably sitting unused in countless storerooms so you have a good chance of getting one for free.

Have you tried turning down the brightness, selecting a different color profile or lowering resolution?

No one here can suggest, recommend or guarantee a display that will not hurt your eyeS.

FWIW most all newer external displays will work with your iMac,

Yes. That's the first thing I did actually. I picked different resolutions, played with the settings and brightness until I found something I was pleased with. But the longer I used the new monitor, my vision seemed to get blurry and I was almost squinting to see. I turned it off and just used the iMac for the rest of the night and I was fine. I'll try and play with the settings again.

Yes. I am very, very aware that Apple displays aren't budget friendly and that's why I didn't even bother searching for one.

If I posted this in the incorrect community, my apologies to everyone. All I did was answer the questions it was asking me to figure out which community to go to and I ended up here. User error I suppose. Sorry.

You have no idea how helpful that would be (I'm a student on a budget)!!! And I would need a USB or USB-C multiport? I only have the thunderbolt and USB-C connection on the back.

At this point, I suggest returning that low resolution HP 1920x1080 monitor and looking for a more expensive higher resolution 24” or 27” display.
