Screentime inaccurate and settings default
I have screentime limits in place for my 13yo. I strongly believe restricting the time they spend on devices is important in supporting their mental wellbeing but am becoming increasingly frustrated with the glitches / anomalies of screentime - and think Apple should be able to do better to make this feature reliable.
Limits in place include downtime , and time limits on Snapchat TikTok etc.
The other day, it seemed something was fried with Snapchat limit and it was openly available - with no restrictions - despite time limit and downtime set to be blocking it. I restarted both devices, checked we were both on same IOS and turned screentime off and on, to no avail. I gave up and it resolved itself the next day.
In addition - I find it incredibly silly that by default when you turn limits or downtime off , and then back on - despite the system managing to remember all the time / app settings previously in place - the toggle for “ block at end of limit / downtime” is the one setting that in infuriatingly defaults to off- another thing the watchful parent has to manually oversee.
In addition , with activity reporting- for apps impacted by a limit to include time ticking over even if the app is not active as a limit has kicked in - this makes a mockery of the data - ie if Snapchat has 30 mins limit but can show usage of 3 hours plus - I have no way to know if a screentime hack is the cause and my daughter getting extra active minutes or if it’s just left running idle ( easy to do). Surely Apple can do better to show reported active minutes in apps - not just “open”, so parents can see accurate , relevant usage data.
Finally - with screentime through family sharing - it seems quite strange to me that screentime for my child can be turned off - removing ALL limits and downtime - by using my phone passcode , rather than the Screentime password like all other screentime related settings - why is this?? There are occasions my child needs my normal passcode - ( help with maps/ driving etc) - when I realised this one area of screentime settings is controlled by me phones passcode ( not screentime passcode - that I keep very much private ) I was completely at loss - why would that be?? )
Any tips / settings adjustments for avoiding the above issues be gratefully received .
