iPhone photos on iCloud are not optimizing

I am out of space today on my iPhone. Yesterday I had 130GB. Yesterday my iCloud photos were optimizing as they should have.

Today, for the first 8 hours of the waking day, the phone tried expanding all of the photos again and chewed up all of the space, making my phone essentially worthless.

I did not change a setting.

What is up?

Yes, I have plenty of space (you have my apple ID and could see this yourself, I'm sure). I'm currently using 10 of 50GB.

To be clear, again, it was optimized on one day, then the next day - without a restart - it unoptimized itself, ate up the iPhone memory, and disabled the basic applications on the phone (email, messaging) for a good part of the day.

The article you referenced was not helpful at all. It's essentially a sales pitch for buying more storage. Frankly, the ability to store pictures in the iCloud with only smaller, optimized images on my iPhone is the sole reason I continue to pay for additional space. If this continues to not work, I fail to see the utility of iCloud in general.

I've checked my settings many, many times. I set it and unset it, per other articles in this forum, to try and get it to work.

Again, that is not the problem. Please read my last 2 comments a bit more carefully: The optimize was working fine. I had lots of space on my phone on Tuesday night, then, on Wednesday morning, suddenly it's full again, and the phone is telling me the Photos are taking up too much space. Unoptimized. No settings change happened. I was literally asleep when this change in behavior occurred.

You guys should really be looking at your software/systems on this rather than trying to deflect.

What is the exact error message that you’re getting. As there is only 10 GB in iCloud, and you believe that your full-resolution photos are stored there, at most 10 GB would be downloaded to your phone (assuming all of your iCloud data is photos data). Might be best to stop turning optimize on and off as that might trigger full downloading and optimization (not really sure). You could also turn off iCloud Photos on your device, delete the photos on your device, and then enable iCloud photos again. And see what happens. Just be sure that you have a backup of your photos just in case.

know also that your device will optimize only if space is necessary on the device. Otherwise, your full-resolution photos will indeed be in the device.
