Finder search results disappear, then reappear

I'm using the regular Finder search to try and locate files on my computer and on an external hard drive. I've worked around this problem in the past, but now I really need to find a file and this is a problem.

When I search, the results come up. They last for a few seconds while I scroll through them and then they just disappear. Usually they don't come back. Once, changing USB-C ports seemed to work, but not anymore. Now I'm trying to find some files from last October and it requires me to scroll through. All of the results disappear after a few seconds. Then they reappear but it brings me back to the top. So I don't have time to scroll through them and find what I'm looking for.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Godpork,

Starting in safe mode may help you isolate the cause of the issue you've noticed. Here's how: How to use safe mode on your Mac

Apple silicon

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Intel processor

1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.

There are additional steps to follow in the article depending on whether the issue continues in safe mode or not.

To help determine if the issue is specific to one user account, you can set up another administrator account to test: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Add a user

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .
If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
2. Click the Add button below the list of users.
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose Administrator.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.

Best regards.
