Preventing cells in Numbers changing format back to Automatic

Am using Numbers v12.1 on a map running OS12.5.1 and having a problem with cells reverting cack to the 'Automatic' format when the figure in the cell is updated.

The cells were originally formatted as Currency and operated as expected, but when the figure is edited the cell reverts to Automatic.

This is problem I've also experienced with earlier versions of Numbers. I've seen this question asked a number of times in this forum but not answer provided helps in my case. The new figure being added is consistent with a Currency value.

Many thanks for any tips or suggestions!

Many thanks for your reply.

There is no formula in that cell, but the cell is part of a formula adding up currency values.

By reverting to Automatic the cell contents are no longer recognised as Currency and so the formula no longer works and the formula cell shows a red triangle waring message. This happens even when changing just one figure in the cell contents.

Also trying to return the Automatic formatting to Currency just doesn't work. it won't respond to changing the Data Format dropdown menu in the Format bar or even by using Copy Style under the Format menu.

The only way I can get the cell to return to Currency format is by pasting in a cell which already has the correct value and the Currency formatting. It's a very cumbersome workaround.

Thanks again for bearing with the question.

The value in column B was just entered as a number - 60 - as was the original value - 55. The first time it converted that value into a Currency value and the second time it appeared not to.

The confusing thing is looking at it now it appears to work fine! The cells are formatted now as Currency and editing the value works as you would expect it to. Puzzling as can't reproduce the problem now, which I unfortunately come across quite often.

Must be doing something weird, just don't know what it is...

Thank you though for your patience!
