I received a text message saying my Apple Pay has been deactivated, why would this happen

Nothing was deactivated because Apple Pay is merely linked to your payment method.

This is a scam!!

If you receive a suspicious email or SMS text message that looks like it's supposed to be from Apple, please email it to reportphishing@apple.com. 
