cannot find backup disk (macOS monterey 12.5 1 13 inch 2016 in time machine)

cannot find the back up disk in time machine. worked one day, everything was ok then wouldn't be found the next


iMac, macOS 10.12

Did the disk fail? Power to the disk? USB connection? Bad cable?
