MacBooks don't run iOS, they run Mac OS.

Upgrades are between annual releases.

Updates are security patches and improvements to upgrades.

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Software Update takes care of the latest updates.

App Store has upgrades.

Your hardware limits what you can upgrade to. Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac and tell us the age of your computer and whether it is a MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro.
