If your screen is too sensitive or responds intermittently to touch:

  1. Restart your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Make sure that your screen is clean and free of any debris or water.
  3. Disconnect any Lightning or USB-C accessories. If your screen works after removing an accessory, try using a different outlet, cable, or charger.
  4. Remove any cases or screen protectors.

If part of your screen doesn't respond, responds intermittently, or responds even when it's not touched, I recommend service.

If your iPad is unresponsive to input, connect your iPad to its Power Adapter and allow the iPad to charge. While still connected to external power, try a forced-restart:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

Note:  If iPad still doesn’t turn on, or if it gets stuck during start up, see the Apple Support article If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t turn on or is frozen. Or if your iPad isn’t working correctly after you restart it, see the iPad Support website.

If you continue to experience difficulties, you will need to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Get Support link at top-right of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad:

I found a fix. Not here but on a non Apple site. I’d already done all you suggested before I posted the issue. Here what did work:

1) Press the volume up and quickly release

2) Press the volume down and quickly release

3) Press and hold the on/off switch until it allows you to do a hard reset by sliding the power off and the touchscreen worked.

As an extra precaution I then held on/off and slid power off until the Apple came up. Now all is good. You might want to share this with the community to avoid having to find an Apple repair store (none are closer than 110 miles from me) and paying a tech guy for this easy fix.
