Simple Siri triggered shortcut to dictate text into Notes

Very simple request. My Shortcut skills haven't worked:

On my iPhone, I want to say "Dictate to Journal" and then it opens Apple Notes to a dedicated note named Journal. It then appends (or better yet, prepends) the text to that note and dates it.

Here's a screenshot of what I have now. It either puts the word "Journal" on the note, not what I say, or it tells me there's no text to append.

snsok ~ Your Find action appears to be configured correctly — so perhaps with all your experimentation, the Shortcuts app has become confused! Here's what I suggest:

  • Delete your "Dictate To Journal" shortcut. (Don't just delete all the actions one by one.)
  • Create the shortcut again carefully – especially the Append action's two parameters.
  • The Magic Variables to choose from should appear correctly, but if not, post a screenshot back here.

...In the unlikely event that the clean start above still doesn't work, here's the iCloud link to my version:

snsok ~ You're welcome. I've no explanation for that problem either. Although it does look like it could be the kind of caching bug that clears itself up after a restart.

Anyway, I hope you'll continue to develop your shortcuts skills. It's basically programming – which is an art in itself. It's not for everyone, but for those few who persevere it can be rewarding. By the way, you may find this resource useful:

@alancito Thanks for the reply, I replicated your shortcut above. I am still stuck. I am not configuring the final step and am still getting the "pass a note to the Append to Note action" message.

When I open the "note" button on the last step, append to Dictated Text to [note], and select "select magic variable", I simply don't know what to select at that point. The link about variables tells me to click on a blue button...but which one?

Can you upload the entire shortcut rather than a screenshot? Screenshot of what happens when I run this shortcut:

snsok ~ I'll send you the iCloud link only as a last resort. At the moment you still have an opportunity to get your shortcut working yourself – and learn...

In your Append action, tap on the (currently unassigned) 2nd parameter field and then choose "Select Magic Variable":

Then tap on Notes right above your Append action:
