MacOS Corrupting pdf files

This is a problem that I have only discovered MacOs Monterey. These files will open with neither Preview nor Acrobat. In a paperless environment this is very serious.

Is there a fix?

Can the files be repaired in any way?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.3

We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

If the current Adobe Acrobat Reader DC cannot open a given PDF, then that PDF was damaged either by third-party or online tools for PDF creation, or something you did on the Mac. I say that as I have hundreds of PDFs here that if I randomly choose any of them, they will open in Preview or Acrobat Reader DC. Not all PDFs will however, open in Preview due to specialized content.

The only way to repair a PDF is to regenerate it from the original document sources with a known tool that does not corrupt PDFs.

I have scanned the files with Bit Defender with on reports.

You’re going to have to chase down what is installed here, and what might have caused the reported file corruptions.

Add-on anti-malware apps are a potential culprit, as those apps and malware can sometimes be difficult to distinguish.

At one point, transfers via Tor were injecting Windows executables with malware.

And in other cases, incorrect FTP transfer settings can corrupt files.

You have access to the systems, and some idea of the file transfer history. (We lack that.)
