I found that efforts to use MS word to translate old WriteNow files just gives a bunch of gibberish with just a few words legible.
However Text edit running on my M1 Mac does a little bit better job, where "better job" means less gibberish and loss of all formatting.
If anyone has a better solution please let me know!
The current LibreOffice Suite can open the old WriteNow documents in LibreOffice Writer.
From its Open > Options > Files selector:
LibreOffice Suite is available by default for macOS Intel, but if you click the operating system selector on the download page, you will see a native Apple Silicon build (which is what I am using).
There are a number of methods for running old versions of Mac OS 6-9. The classic is Sheepshaver, but there are several new Javascript versions that you can download or even run in a web browser. These tools would probably have WriteNow or you could install it. From there, you can export your documents to something more portable.
Well I looked at the sheepshaver site and I'm not sure I want to try messing around with it, or bassilisk. Maybe I can find an old centris , or power PC that I can hook up my external drive to. (It's the old hard drive to my centris 650 in a external case.)
