Trying to ready 2017 iMac to give away. Stripped data but when I try to reinstall Mac OS I get a folder with ? mark. support.apple.com/mac/startup no help. Would appreciate help to proceed.

I did all that. Now I want to reinstall Mac OS but am stuck at the point where the screen shows "folder with a ? mark. I can't go any further.
Hold down the Command + R keys on startup until it boots into the Recovery Partition, you got ride of Mac OS from the primary drive and now need to install Mac OS on the internal drive.
I have tried recovery startup (Command + R keys) several times. The folder with ? mark appears on the screen. It won't let me do anything further.
Did you wipe out your Recovery Partition too, you did not get any instructions to do that. You can do an Internet Recovery.
