Lower track not shown during fade in upper track

I have a number of still images in the timeline. The timeline is 16:9, but the images are 4:3. They were shot with a gray background. I created a track that contains only a single clip with that gray color in a lower track which nicely fills the rest of the 16:9 canvas.

A problem occurs during crossfades between two images. As soon as the fade starts, the area outside the images changes to black, even though the lower track containing the gray color is just one clip across the entire sequence.

Obviously, what I want is to keep filling the canvas with the grayish color while the fade between the images happens. Hope this is clear.

How can I accomplish that?

Thanks

You can either manually create the fades using the 4:3 images Transform > Opacity control or you can create an **Effect** (NOT a Transition) in Motion that will automatically fade the image (Effect Source).

On the plus side, doing it manually, you only have to set the keyframes once (or use the Video Animation editor [Control-V] to simply drag the Opacity controls to set the fades), Select and Copy the image clip, then type Command-Shift-V to "Paste Attributes". In the popup dialog, select only the Compositing options, then click the Paste button. You can select all the other images at once and do a single Paste Attributes to set all the selected clips at once.

The problem with Titles, Generators and Transitions is that the ***Project Size*** takes precedence, so *everything* viewable in the frame is getting faded and there's really no way to limit the bounds to the 4:3 aspect size with Transitions. Effects, on the other hand, are restricted to the aspect ratio of the media.

Thanks for the suggestion and yes, they are cross dissolves. I just tried fade to color, cause it sounds like just what the doctor ordered. I'm not so worried about exact color matching, as long as I can get close.

Unfortunately, 'Fade To Color' only means that the color is gray at the end of the fade while it still kicks in black at the beginning of the fade. In other words, it doesn't matter which color I choose, the beginning of the fade always looks the same.

So I came up with a workaround: removing the gray background in the stills so the border is transparent.

That's pretty labor intensive, unfortunately, because not only do I need to process a bunch of images, but I also have to align the images on the canvas over again. It does look good however, as I just saw with a test with one of the images. Too bad that fade to color didn't do the trick. Thanks anyway :-)
