Can I delete "Previously Relocated Files" after moving them to another folder?

I just finished moving all my files from my iMac to my new Mac Studio. All of my work files previously lived in the shared files/relocated items folder after an upgrade a few years ago (I didn't see any reason to move them). Yesterday I read the PDF included in the "Relocated Items" folder about moving the files to a different place on the drive. I did that this morning, but instead of just moving them, it said it was copying them to the new location. They appear to now be in both locations - my user folder where I moved them to, and the "Previously Relocated Items" folder where they've been. Are there really two instances of them? If so, can I safely delete the ones in the "Relocated Items" folder?

Does it make any sense that it copied them instead of simply moving them? I dragged and dropped, so I definitely didn't tell it to copy them.

Yes, because you did not own the files in that folder. You did not have permission to modify the enclosing folder, so it copied the files. You can then delete the folder, but you will be requested to authenticate the action.

It appears to allow me to. I opened one of the files from the "new" location, made a slight edit, and then saved it. It shows that it was saved today, but the one in the "Previously Relocated Items" folder still shows the old last modified date. It's very strange, though, because when I moved the files to the new location, the dialog box said it was copying them as opposed to moving them - which it looks like it did because the file in the original location did not update, as I mentioned. But the available space on the internal drive did not change. Are the files in the "Users > Shared > Previously Relocated Items > Security" folder not counted in the available space of the drive?

OK, that's what I figured, but in this case, I simply moved them from the "Users > Shared > Previously Relocated Items > Security" folder to the "Users > my username" folder on the same drive. Does it make any sense that it copied them instead of simply moving them? I dragged and dropped, so I definitely didn't tell it to copy them.
