Music Migration

How do I copy my entire music library, including playlists and song ratings, from my old MacBook to a new MacBook Air? Migration Assistant lost the playlists and ratings.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.5

DFB_using_Apple,

Our apologies for the confusion. We'd like to learn more to see how we can help. When you used Migration Assistant, did you select the option to transfer to another Mac?

"Use Migration Assistant

You're now ready to use Migration Assistant to move your files from the old Mac to the new one.

On your new Mac

  1. Open Migration Assistant, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. Then click Continue.
  2. When Migration Assistant asks you for permission to make changes, enter your administrator password, then click OK.
  3. When asked how you want to transfer your information, select the option to transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk. Then click Continue.

On your old Mac

  1. Open Migration Assistant, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. Then click Continue.
  2. When asked how you want to transfer your information, select the option to transfer to another Mac. Then click Continue."

You'll find those steps and more information here: Move your content to a new Mac

Thanks!

I used two external hard drives (let's call them TM and MUSIC) and my old MacBook Pro and new MacBook Air (let's call them OLD and NEW).

Using OLD, I erased both TM and MUSIC using Disk Utility.

I connected TM to OLD, designated TM as the backup drive in Time Machine, and did a backup of OLD to TM.

I disconnected TM, connected MUSIC to OLD, and dragged the folder Music from my user folder to the external drive MUSIC.

At this point, TM should have contained a standard Time Machine backup of OLD, and MUSIC should have contained one folder named Music (an exact copy of the Music folder on Old).

I disconnected MUSIC from OLD and connected it to NEW.

Strangely, MUSIC had a folder named Backup_20220813, which contained the folder named Music which appeared to be the exact copy I expected.

I deleted the folder Music from NEW.

I dragged the folder Music from MUSIC to NEW.

After the long copy session, I brought up the Music App on NEW and saw my songs (apparently all of them plus 45 from ???) but missing most of my playlists and all of my song ratings. I have spent a **** of a lot of hours massaging my ratings and playlists, so my disappointment was extreme.

An alternative approach if Music isn't reading the .musiclibrary file correctly on a new computer might be to export the library as an XML file on the old system, copy over the XML file, edit if needed to accommodate any path changes, then import the XML into an empty Music library. Tracks will show the current date for date added, but otherwise this should result in an identical library.

That partly worked. The playlists came in but song ratings are missing. I can live with that. It will be tedious, but I can manually update the song ratings.

I'm now more worried about the next time I have to migrate to another computer. I expected Time Machine and Migration Assistant to make the move smoothly. Does this process normally work; i.e., does the Music app have all the data after a transfer to a new computer?

The process should be straightforward. Copy the entire Music folder over and connect to the library. I don't know why it seems to be failing for some people.

I've not used Migration Assistant but that is because I'm confident moving my files and data about manually, and also use the cloud. I use iCloud Drive on my Macs for most of my stuff, and OneDrive for sharing with my Windows boxes, so most of my stuff is in the cloud already. My main library (c. 65K tracks) is back on iTunes for Windows and I have an Apple Music library (c. 10K tracks) that appears across all my Apple devices.
