Changes I make in Mac contacts are not being saved, more than half the time. This includes if I click Edit and Done and make sure the changes are there and correct. This is making the program unusable for me. I have read some past threads on this that didn't seem to provide any solution. Ideas? Thank you!

1) Yes I am following the proper steps to edit contacts.
2) When I create a new contact and enter information the first time, it saves it. After that, edits are not reliable.
3) Yes my Mac OS is updated.
Is the Contacts Application configured for Syncing with a Source Other than iCloud ?
Have seen some would have issues when Contacts is using Google and the only suggestion is;
1 - In System Preferences >> Internet Accounts >> Disable Sync for Contacts. The make the changes in Contacts. Then re-enable sync.
