Command + D is making copies of files, not deleting them

Is this a bad trick. All of the instructions I can find to delete a file or folder in Finder or the desktop say first to drag it/them to the trash can or select them and press Command+D. Has Monterey changed that? Is there no key command to delete now? I see there is no delete under edit. I have a hard time doing the drag thing over to trash. Please let me know if there is a new way to delete a file or folder other than the drag method.

Thanks

As Niel said, you want Command-Delete

and not Command-D.

Incidentally, this has NOT changed with Monterey, it has been like this for many years. Could you post a link to those instructions you found that mention Command-D?

I just tested command + delete and it worked. Please forgive, I have been on this new little laptop for 36 hours out of 48 trying to learn and get used to the Mac system. It has been 30 years since I went MS OS. What I stated in my question, I thought I had seen and attempted. I am finding very old information about various macOS's but like you say, command + delete has been around many years.

Now I am wondering why under Edit in the menu bar, the item Delete is so often gray/not accessible and even disappears when a selection is made.

So either drag to trash or command+delete are the two options. All day/night sessions converting from a PC to Mac have me a bit delirious.

Thank you for the replies.
