Menu bar icons missing on MacBook after update

I did the system update last night (Monterey 12.5) and now my MacBook has icons missing in the menu bar: no date, time, battery, or wifi, but 3rd party icons do show. Any advice? I've already tried changing the menu bar system preferences to no avail. When I boot into safe mode, the issue is still there, but when I created a new user and logged in the problem was gone for that user.
