I have tried twice == Photoslibrary [127G] opens but has beachball spinning. Both from my just clicking on the Photos app to open it and also when I click on the actual photos library to open it. Should I rebuild and if so what keystroke to use?
The library is inside computer's Pictures folder and hard drive has 350G open/free; running Mojave
iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 10.14
If retiring the library doesn't help try this:
1 - launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new library. Import a few photos and make sure it works as it should. Then close the test library and try to open yours.

There's no reason not to try repair the library-- it doesn't hurt. Push Command and Option while clicking on the Photos icon. This opens a screen that asks if you want to repair the library and gives the library's name in case you have more than one. Hope this fixes the problem!
Thank you to both of you == I was able to repair the library and it works fine now == I think part of the problem was that last time Photos was launched it actually was being used on a photoslibrary on another drive so it couldn't find it == and even trying to start up the main library didn't end up repointing Photos to it. But repairing did let me get back to the main one...thanks for the explanations - good to know for future use.
