Repeated notifications to change Apple ID

I keep getting a notification that an (unidentified) device on my trusted device list requested a change of Apple ID password. It then opens system preferences, Apple ID, and prompts me to enter a new password, but doing so just starts the same cycle over again, along with the hassle of changing password on other devices. Spent quite a bit of time with Apple support, but no resolution yet.

Check your device list to see if there is a device signed in that you don't recognize. You can remove the device using the steps in the article below. As a precaution, change your password.

Have you added 2 Factor Authentication to your account for more security. If the attempts continue, you might want to consider a name change.

Make sure you turn off Find My Phone before signing out of the old ID. Once signed out and Find My Phone is off, then sign in with the new ID, then turn Find My Phone back on.

There were a couple of devices that didn't need to be there, and I removed them, but it had no effect. I also changed password once, but it had no effect. Still get the notifications. Apple support found this very weird and had me reinstall OS. Also to no effect. Might try changing password one more time. If that doesn't help, will see if Apple support has any more ideas.
