Fingerprint recognition not working

My fingerprint Touch ID has been EXTREMELY temperamental ever since I bought my current MacBook Pro. On my previous MacBook it worked perfectlyly. One difference I have noted is that the material used on the sensor has changed (more of a matt rather than a gloss finish) and I wonder if this is a factor in the unreliability that I am experiencing. I have tried all of the usual fixes - don't move your finger, clean both surfaces, reinstall the finger prints etc. but nothing seems to help. It is very irritating to say the least. Does anybody ave any other thoughts as you how this might be fixed - at the moment it is only working about 10% or less of the time. What is so annoying is that occasionally it does work!

The best you can do if you have an issue— equivalent Shut down, close the lid 30 secs+ , reboot as normal.
