Attempted to factory reset Macbook.

I was given an old laptop to use for myself, and I was attempting to factory reset it. I think I ended up removing the Macintosh HD, and now whenever I try disk startup this comes up. It was on macOS Mojave 14 if I recall, and I'd like to know if it's possible to somehow get it back, or if I'd have to buy a new disk.

I've tried restarting and installing the system it gives (I can't remember what it was called), but nothing has been working, and I can't find any good answers. Thank you for any help!

Hi,

It's telling you the SSD (Macintosh HD) is failing and is beyond repair. It will have to be replaced (it may not be worth the cost, depending on the age/model of the Mac). There's no sense trying to install an OS on it anymore.

Tjk is right, the internal SSD has most likely reached the end of its service life.

Your best option is to replace the SSD if your MacBook is user serviceable (cost effective) or bring it in for Apple authorized repair (if they accept it depending on model year).

Another option is to install OSX / MacOS on an external boot drive and load by holding 'option' or configuring for target disk mode (although I don't recommend it, can be clunky).
