Google Chrome slow

Hi!

I have a problem with Google Chrome - on some websites page loading VERY slow and I feel like Chrome is "lagging" (see video). Edge have same problem. Safari at the same time works fine.

I've tried:

  • Reinstall Chrome (also manually cleared Chrome folders)
  • Disable all extensions

Today I loaded MacBook in safe mode and magic! All works fine. Then reboot in normal mode - same problem.

I have one thought: I've installed Apache on my macbook and when I tried to open my local website (localhost) - web page loading takes ~7-10 seconds. Maybe that two problems is connected, but after turning off Apache - problem still exist.

I will appreciate if someone will help to find a problem.

First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This user tip describes what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

That being said you've installed what most of the experienced contributors to these forums consider to be akin to malware: CleanMyMac.

Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. Then rerun Etrecheck and check the report for any files with CleanMyMac or MacPaw in the file name. Delete any that you find.

Then Boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and reboot normally and test to see if the problem persists or not.

How can I speed up Chrome loading?

Speed up Google Chrome

  1. Step 1: Update Chrome. Chrome works best when you're on the latest version. ...
  2. Step 2: Close unused tabs. The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work. ...
  3. Step 3: Turn off or stop unwanted processes. Turn off or delete unwanted extensions. ...
  4. Step 5: Check your Windows computer for Malware.

More concerned that you even have Edge and Chrome on a MacBook and they both are lagging. Personally I use Safari / Firefox combo.

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the first window that comes up so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Also click the About… vurron and read the info to further permit full disk access.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to include the report in your reply.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine the root cause of the problem.

Unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer, school or bank's servers, they are useless from a privacy standpoint.  Read these two articles: Public VPN's are anything but private and Former Malware Distributor Kape Technologies Now Owns ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, Zenmate, and a Collection of VPN “Review” Websites

That being said uninstall Surfshark according to the developer's instructions and test to see if the Chrome problem persists.
