What if I want to keep my old mac and some of its files and software in place?

I just received my new Mac and need to transfer some of my files and software from my old Mac book Pro (2014). I plan to keep my old Mac as my "writing" computer so I don't want to get rid of everything. Can I copy without replacing software and files?

Read: Move your content to a new Mac

When you use Migration Assistant it doesn't remove anything from your old Mac, it just copies your data to your new Mac.
