M1 Macbook Pro screen turns off

It started around a month ago, screen would randomly turn off. I thought whole computer was shutting down so I would restart it. But it's gotten progressively worse, and now when I restart I'll see the Apple logo for a second but then it turns off. If I close lid and reopen I can see screen working OK for a split second, then it turns off again. Computer seems to still work OK but of course I can't see anything. Actually if it's dark I can see faint blurry screen, can see cursor moving, but not at all usable.

I have Genius appointment, but curious if anyone has any suggestions.

Good afternoon demet123,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you are having issues with the display on your MacBook Pro.

Can we ask a few questions about your experience?

What is the specific model of your MacBook Pro in Settings > About This Mac?

What macOS are you currently running?

Have you tried attaching an external display to see if the issue is with the hardware?

Have you tried starting your Mac in safe mode?

The resources below will provide some guidance:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - macOS User Guide

Connect a display to your Mac

Let us know how your appointment with the Apple Store works out.

Take care.

Haha, I went to the Genius appointment and the computer worked fine. So I brought it home and planned to do fresh install of OS, annnddd.... screen is not working again. I can sometimes see screen when I open lid, but it's very brief and doesn't work every time. I tried an external monitor yesterday, no joy. Has latest OS. It's a 16" Macbook Pro M1 Pro. Since I can't see screen I can't boot into safe mode. I guess I'm going to drop it off at Apple store tomorrow, Thanks for any help.

demet123,

Given that you’re unable to test your computer in safe mode due to your screen not working as expected, and you’re unable to connect your MacBook Pro to an external monitor so that you can attempt a fresh reinstall of the OS, we think that the path to resolution that you’re taking is the best route to take.

Please keep the community posted with the outcome of your upcoming appointment by letting us know if you were able to reproduce the issue you’re describing to us at the Genius Bar.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!

I still do not know what exactly is causing it. I dropped it off at Apple store a few days ago and they said thy fixed it, but when I went in a tried to start it up today, screen quit immediately. They had done OS and firmware installation. Now it is being shipped off for hardware diagnostics and hopefully repair. I will update once I know more.
