Can't enable Cinematic effect in FCPX: "The Cinematic effect can't be enabled".

I can't get the Cinematic effect to work in FCPX. I have recently updated to OSX 12.5 and iOS 16.0.0.

The effect works on iPhone Pro 13 and I can also see it in the Photos app on OSX. Photos app shows "Cinematic" label on the video. However, when I start to edit the video in Photos, I can't edit the depth of field (but the effect is applied though) - the timeline doesn't show focus points or anything else related to the Cinematic video. So there's something wrong already here.

My iPhone has previously prompted to me to process videos before importing and I have clicked ok. I then try to import the clip into FCPX. The clips are imported and show without Cinematic effect. I then try to drag the clip to timeline and click on "Cinematic" in the inspector. I then get message "The Cinematic effect can't be applied".

This message also appears when I try to enable Cinematic keyframe editing for the clip directly from the timeline.

What could this be? I tried to shoot new videos and it happens with all of them.

FCPX says "The Cinematic effect can't be enabled."

Here's what I do:

First I check in the Photos (syncs via iCloud). It has the "Cinematic"-label:

I double click to open the video in Photos - it still has "Cinematic" (Elokuvallinen) -label.

I click "Edit" - I can't see the focus depth editing tools in the bottom anymore. They used to appear on Cinematic clips before (so I could for example animate depth of field or change it - however, it's not there for some reason).

Nevertheless, I move to FCPX. I open the import dialog to import the clip directly from iPhone. I have clicked on iPhone before this to process the files (it seems to do something to cinematic clips so they can be imported properly).

The clip imports. I drag it to timeline and get this warning.

As suggested, I add HDR tools to convert from HDR to SDR.

I now try to enable Cinematic in FCPX by clicking the "Cinematic"-check box in the FCPX inspector. The error I get can be seen in the screenshot: "The Cinematic effect can't be enabled". I get no explanation about why not.

I also try to enable it via animating the timeline parameter - I get the same error, shown in the screenshot below.

Hi! Thanks for the reply.

I checked out your article and I do import the files as you suggest, directly from my phone via cable, by initiating the import dialogue in FCPX. I get this error nevertheless. I also tried dragging them directly from Photos, but I get the same error.

If I export from Photos to hard drive, the blur gets imprinted on the files and then importing these files naturally works, but I lose quality and the ability to alter the depth of field so this is a lossy workflow.

Thank you very much for the detailed information.

I believe the problem is here. "First I check in the Photos (syncs via iCloud)."

iCloud Photo Library shouldn't be used with video. It really throttles everything. It's a joke. The sidecar file gets stripped off, and quality gets degraded. Don't have anything to do with it.

Switch off syncing. Shoot a cinematic clip. Connect the phone and import the clip.
