When I restart my mac desktop, there's the sound of a youtube video playing -- somewhere -- but I can't find it to shut it off.

It's OK now. From having this Mac for so long, I forgot about Task Manager in Google Chrome. I found it and shut the video down.

You should shutdown your iMac but before it shuts down you need to uncheck Re-open windows when logging back in
Try to start it in safe mode.
