Playing Blu-Rays on MacBook Pro

I'm traveling with my MacBook Pro and I brought along some Blu-Rays from my collection hoping they would play on my laptop. I have an external Blu-Ray player that connects perfectly and recognised the disc, but doesn't play. I tried fiddling with VLC but none of the advice I found online works. I downloaded a trial version of Elmedia Player, but it refuses to open the disc at all, just flashes the title and goes blank. I don't want to upgrade to the paid version of it doesn't really play protected Blu-rays. I'm not trying to do anything illegal, I just want to play my own discs and I don't want to pay for software that will turn out useless.

Any advice would be appreciated!

There are no 4K UHD Blu-ray players available for macOS that I am aware. MacGO has a open-ended trial of their Blu-Ray Player Pro that works for most ordinary Blu-ray discs.
