Using US iMessage number with foreign SIM

Hi All,

I’ll be traveling to Europe soon and was hoping to purchase a physical European based SIM when I arrive, as this is significantly cheaper than the international day pass offered by AT&T. I currently have a iPhone XS Max. Would it be possible to utilize the foreign SIMs data to receive and send iMessages and wifi based calls using my US based AT&T number? If so, how would I go about setting this up?

Cell phone carriers from most countries typically have mutual roaming agreements that basically allow you to use their wireless network when traveling abroad. Generally you do not need to do anything - the foreign carrier will take over so to speak and you will see another carrier name on your cell phone's screen once you are in another country. Though, sometimes, depending on your current carrier and plan, your phone number may not be eligible to be transferred to another carrier &/or SIM Card, especially in the case of buying an foreign SIM Card. I highly recommend getting in contact with your current carrier as well as the foreign SIM Card company, since they have more information on to what works, how the temporary transfer is going to work, etc,, again, as carrier SIM Card and data coverage concerns are dealt with the third party carriers/companies directly. Hopefully this helps!
