Can an SSD be used for Time Machine?

I'm looking at an IMac 24" and want to have Time Machine backup. My current system has a Tb Seagate hard drive for Time Machine. Once I've used that to migrate data to a new system, can I reuse that drive as TM on the new one. I believe that means the drive will be erased, then refreshed from the new system. Is that correct?

Or would it make more sense to get a new SSD ($$$) to use instead?

iMac, macOS 10.13

Yes, you can reuse your HDD - in my experience, the new system will create a subdirectory for the new iMac.

If you can afford to get a new SSD, then it is far better as it is faster, too.
