I’m trying to connect my 2020 Mac Air M1 to a second monitor utilizing a hdmi /usb 3 cable plugged into my hub adaptor. My Mac won’t read it and I can’t get Display options to come up despite following directions.

Does that mean you already have 1 monitor connected to it?
The M1 MacBook Air only supports 1 external monitor. If you already have one connected you cannot have another.

Have you tried plugging it in to the MacBook's Thunderbolt 3 port and seeing if it comes up then? Like Phil0124 stated, it could be a port issue.
It’s a UGREEN USB C hub for MacBook.

No, I don’t have another monitor connected to it. Second monitor meaning in addition to laptop.
What hub make / model adapter are you using exactly?
What port on the hub are you plugging the display into?
Is that port rated for video?
Looks like just a standard USB-A 3.1 port which normally do not transfer Video, only data.
