Backup too large, voice memos
Strap in. I've been calling Apple support to no avail for a month now. My case has been escalated more times than I can count, and still no one has found a solution. First, none of my frustration is directed toward the support team, all of whom have been professional and have done their best to help.
A month ago, I stopped being able to back up my iPhone SE (2020) to the computer using iTunes. The backup took all day and only stopped when it maxed out the storage on my computer! I have about 50gb of data on the phone, but the backup was over 300gb. This happened on every computer I tried. It did not happen with any other phone.
After a week of calls with Apple support, I downloaded diagnostic software. The techs told me that something was going haywire with my voice memos app. One or more memos were duplicating infinitely during the backup. They had no solution other than 1) deleting all my memos (not going to happen) or 2) deleting the app and redownloading it to try and fix the glitch. First, they said, make sure I sync the memos to my computer in case deleting the app deletes my memos too. Come to find out (as lots of you have apparently figured out too, judging by the number of complaints online) iTunes does not recognize any of the voice memos I have recorded in the past year. There is no way to sync them because iTunes doesn't recognize them. They simply don't show up as part of the phone's storage.
So, no way to back up because voice memos is broken. No way to fix voice memos because iTunes is broken. I asked if Apple would pay for more iCloud storage. The support team said they didn't have the authority and I would have to submit a claim to the billing department. I asked about a new phone. They said that was impossible because it was not a hardware issue. The most helpful suggestion I received from the support team was--I kid you not--to stop trying to use iTunes and just pay for a third-party software!
Apple software isn't working. Apple can't fix it. Apple won't pay for an alternative. My next phone will be an Android. Thanks.
