AirTag is not a security or anti-theft device. Read Apple's marketing page here for explanation.


They work when in cars the same way when attached to anything - a suitcase or a dog's collar for example. The same page above summarises their tracking function: Your AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. 


AirTags can be located using Find My, as described in Use the Find My app to locate a missing device or item.
