I create a new document. After typing a few words it shows Untitled- Edited at the top. It won't save and I cannot re-name the document. It won't even close when I press the red (close) button. It will minimize (green) and will go into the dock (yellow) but I can't get rid of it even if I am willing to lose all the whole thing.

See if restarting your Mac helps. If not try starting in Safe Mode. Start up your Mac in safe mode – Apple Support (AU) This disables all third-party software and fonts. After starting in safe mode start up in normal mode and see if the problem persists.
