Photos stuck on "Updating Library" after upgrading to Monterey.

After migrating my data from my old iMac running El Capitan, most of my photos did not make it (probably around 60K+ of them). I have since upgraded to Monterey, and my Photos app is stuck on "Updating Library". The most I can get is 10% completed, and nothing I can do will stop the process. Since all of my photos are on the old iMac that still runs, I don't really need them on the new computer. How can I stop the updating process? I must say I much prefer iPhoto because of the additional photo editing it allowed. I just can't seem to get used to Photos!

Hi

I assume (since you want to stop the update) that your library is on an external drive. If so, you can't stop the update process once started.

What format is the external drive? It needs to be APFS, or MacOS Exteneded for compatibility with a photos library, directly connected, and the ignore ownership checkbox checked. Keeping the library on an incompatible format is a common reason for the upgrade process to fail.

Select the drive in finder and hit CMD-i

Hello Tony, and Thank You for your response.

I checked and my external backup drive is in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. And as you can see, the "Ignore ownership on this volume" check box does not appear. I'm sure my Photos library is in a backup on the external drive, but because I migrated my data directly from the old iMac to the new one, it has to be on my hard drive as well. I believe the updating process is taking place from the files on my computer and not from the external drive. I upgraded to Monterey once the migration was done, if that makes a difference. Sorry, but I only know enough to be dangerous! ;-)
