Mail is creating Import mailboxes.

Mail has started creating " Import-1" to now "Import-8" with old emails. So far I have tried deleting the folder but can only delete the mails inside not the folders. Any suggestions on how to stop this or get rid of the folders

Hello Ewen Wilson,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with deleting folders in Mail on your Mac. To start, follow the steps listed here to see if they resolve the issue: Create or delete mailboxes in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

"Delete mailboxes

WARNING: Deleting a mailbox permanently deletes the mailbox and its contents (including other mailboxes), and can’t be undone.

  1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, select a mailbox in the Mail sidebar.
  2. Choose Mailbox > Delete Mailbox.
  3. If you have problems deleting a mailbox on the server for an IMAP account, contact the provider of your account.

When you delete a Smart Mailbox, the messages it displayed remain in their original locations.

If you use the Finder to delete a mailbox, the change may not appear in Mail.

Note: If you set up Time Machine to back up files on your Mac, you can use the backups to restore content that Mail downloaded (based on options set in Mail and on your Mac). See Restore items backed up with Time Machine."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

I Just had some partial success.

I was able to reduce the number of emails being repeatedly imported from around 80 to 15.

I did this by manually deleting the contents of all of the "Trash.mbox" "Data" folder inside of the folder named "7ADCBC52-0BCE-49CF-B13D-F570734605D9" for each of the folders I am assuming correspond to an account that I have either had or currently have in my Apple Mail program.

I still get a new "Import-..." folder with the same (now 15) emails each time I restart Apple Mail. Wonder where these last 15 emails (from various accounts) are coming from... It is not from any on-line source because I have disconnected my laptop from the internet to test this.

I found the remaining 15 emails in one of the "Spam.mbox" folders. I deleted those emails from the user/library/mail/V#/Folder with a long name with dashes for a name ######$$-####-$#$$-####-##$$$##/Spam.mbox directory and now Apple Mail has stopped creating "Import" folders once I deleted the then empty Import folder from the Apple Mail application using right click, delete folder in Apple Mail... I have no idea why Apple Mail was doing this.

Maybe it was due to a recovery I made a while back. The emails seemed to have been orphaned somehow, and there is no way I could have found and deleted them without going into the finder directory. This is not a very elegant solution... but it seems to have worked for me.

Hi,

I am having the same issue.

I have both deleted the "import-..." folder from the sidebar as suggest by K_Faith, and removed the import folder in user/library/mail/V.../AC42BDEF-2847-4629-A0EA-30E4BBFCEECF(in my case) as described by thirdvet

But when I re-start Apple Mail it just creates a new set of "import-..." folders.

Where is Apple Mail importing these emails from? And what is a permanent fix for this?

Cheers,

Daniel
